About Me

Master of Speech Language Pathology

Hi, I’m Katy, I’ve been a practicing speech pathologist for the past nine years. I also have a background in theatre and performance, which I use in my practice in the areas of voice, fluency, social communication and emotional literacy.

I work with families seeking communication intervention for their little ones. I approach therapy goals in close consultation with families and use a strengths-based approach. My sessions are play-based and tailored to the individual needs of the child.

Through Speak the Speech Pathology, I provide services to:

  • NDIS participants who are plan-managed or self-managed.

  • Self-funded clients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is speech pathology?

Speech pathology is a field of expertise practiced by a clinician known as a speech-language pathologist (SLP), which specialises in the evaluation and treatment of communication disorders, voice disorders, and swallowing disorders.

At what age should a child start speaking?

Children typically begin speaking their first words around 12 months of age. However, this can vary widely. Speech pathologists are often consulted if a child hasn’t started speaking by the age of 18 months or isn’t putting two words together by age 2.

How can I tell if my child has a speech or language disorder?

Signs of speech or language disorders in children can include not speaking at all or speaking very little, having difficulty following directions, struggling to find the right words, and having a limited vocabulary compared to peers. If you have concerns, it’s best to consult a speech pathologist.

Can adults benefit from speech therapy?

Yes! Adults can benefit from speech therapy. Adult speech therapy is often necessary after a stroke, traumatic brain injury, or diagnosis of a neurological condition like Parkinson’s disease. It can also help with voice disorders, fluency disorders like stuttering, and swallowing difficulties.

How can a speech pathologist help breastfeeding mothers?

Speech pathologists are trained to assess and treat feeding disorders in infants. This includes difficulties with latching, sucking, and swallowing – all of which are crucial for successful breastfeeding. They can evaluate the infant’s oral-motor function to identify any underlying issues.

What is involved in a speech pathology assessment?

A speech pathology assessment typically involves an evaluation of speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing skills. This may include standardized tests, observations, interviews with the client and family, and a review of medical history.

How long does speech therapy typically last?

The duration of speech therapy varies widely depending on the individual’s age, type of disorder, severity, and response to therapy. It can range from a few months to several years. Regular reassessments are conducted to monitor progress.
